1962-Winners of the Sussex 5-aside football championship

This team beat Lewes Boys in the semi-final and Brighton Boys in the final.  Not bad for a little town especially as both opposition teams had players on the books of professional clubs.

The game at Lewes centred on a controversial goal given to the Newhaven boys.  Such was the anger of the home team and their supporters that the Newhaven team quickly changed after the match and ran all the way from the Landport Centre to Lewes railway station.

The team were prevented from defending the trophy the following year by the Boy's Club leader Dave King who said the other boys should have a turn.  A case of political correctness way back!

The Boy's Club was based at the old Shakespeare Hall in South Road, just north of the Fish and Chip shop.

Good little team here. Jonah was easily the best player on show.

It is quite ironic that Graham was Mayor of Newhaven at one time, but when he worked for Southern Water he couldn't run a bath. David Bain was a great lad, I played cricket with him for many years. He was a good footballer and a very good wicket keeper, AND a good laugh.
