FIRLE BEACON

The Beacon from Newhaven and Newhaven from the Beacon

By Laurie Stonehouse

These photographs are of Firle Beacon and the views many of you will never have seen. For how many of you have actually ventured up to this imposing landmark on the South Downs where you can look out all over the Lewes district including Newhaven.  Maybe these pictures will coax you to make the journey (or they might save you the effort). Apart from the views, there's not much else at the site of the Beacon, just a small car park and Blackcap Farm further down towards Newhaven.  The first picture was taken 7 years ago and shows the billowing smoke from the fire at Jordans Scrap metal yard on the North Quay.  I wonder if once the incinerator is finished and in operation whether this picture of billowing smoke from the North Quay area won't look so strange! The remaining Photographs I took last summer when I was in my delivery van. It's quite some drive from the A27 up the long road to the beacon and then over the hill down to Blackcap Farm!

These pictures do not show Firle Beacon, the masts seen in the photographs are on Beddingham Hill. Firle Beacon is further along the South Downs Way to the east, go past the car park at Firle Bostal, the road comes up here from the village of Firle, carry on walking for about another mile and then you arrive at Firle Beacon.
