MEECHING ROAD

Meeching Road joins the High Street, January 1979. The Georgian Mansion House, Sussex Lodge, would have been facing the camera, but had been demolished more than 10 years earlier replaced by lock-up shops. The present day Post Office occupies the site to the left of the parade. About to be removed is Newhaven's first purpose built Post Office (1904), which was demolished from centre right to make way for the present D'Acre Road that now leads to the current mult-story car park.  The site of the car park had previously contained the Girls School and the town's Police Station which faced on to the former D'Acre Road (now Southway) between South Road and Meeching Road.  This led to D'Acre Villa, later known as Saxonholme which was demolished in Autumn 2006 and is currently a blank building site.
