CEMETERY AND ISOLATION HOSPITAL - 1902

View across the Ouse Valley

This old picture postcard appears to have been taken from high up in a tree near the 4th fairway off the Peacehaven golf course.  The buildings at the bottom of the slope are the cemetery and the isolation hospital; the River Ouse appears to be at high tide.  In the far distance, in the left corner of the picture is the South Heighton cement works, whilst over to the right of the picture there are just a few buildings in South Heighton.  The adjoining land is completely void of any houses, with just tracks crossing the field.

Lovely picture! I grew up in one of the houses in South Heighton, this picture would have been taken when they were still relatively new. I think they were finished in 1898. My parents still live in the house and along with a majority of the neighbours, they have painted their house in different colours so they stand out and look pretty on the hillside.

That is Portland Terrace to the right in South Heighton. 

Is there any history about this Terrace or pictures? Would love to see them..

I am very proud to have been the Newhaven Cemetery Superintendent work's Foreman for 5 years in the 90s, and very proud of the staff who looked after it and worked extremely hard to maintain the cemetery, building's and play area's that were under my supervision. They were Tony Skinner, Roy Kybett, Tony Crocker, Robin Deakin and Peter Shew, great bunch of staff.
