AROUND THE HARBOUR

I would estimate Photo 1 - Summer 1974, Photos 2 - 6 c1965, Photo 7,8 - 2003 and Photo 9 - c1965

1)  Well-known photo - summer 1974, just before new bridge came into use.   2) Summer 1966 - during British seamen's strike.   3) No later than 1964, when Arromanches was sold.   4) ?, but probably mid 1960's, from the design.   5) Winter 1965 to 1968. The IOW paddlers were repainted blue in late 1965 and withdrawn in 1969.   6) Same era - 1960's.   7) 2003-2007, when Dieppe was withdrawn.   8) Photo taken at same time as 7.   9) c.1965

Pleased of interest on dates of the photos, The year of B.W photo of the bridge is correct. taken from the top of one of the cranes that were being used at North quay.Very windy up there. sorry about not being able to date the others definitely. We photographed so much of the area and never thought about the year or that Our Newhaven would be on line. What a change from the way we photgraphed in the past to the digital set up of the present. Oh well times do change very quickly.

I have to correct myself slightly. Photo No 2) This may be just after the 1966 Seamen's Strike. I have a photo of Brighton being moved ahead of Falaise aorund that time. Photo number 9) I've had a closer look with the magnifying glass. Phase 2 of Cresta Marina has clearly been completed, the large white motor yacht Larida is at the end of the main pontoon and, most telling, the sailing barge Maid of Connaught is in the Marina behind the Watch House. This is therefore from mid 1966 onwards, but probably not much later.

Nice selection of old colour photos of port area. I can also confirm picture 5, must be late 1960's probably 1968, as the clinker-built vessel (by R.Lower & Son) in the immediate foreground (i.e 'Jayne Marie') was built for Mr Ron Parker, of Newhaven at this time and I was involved in her construction during my apprenticeship with this local firm.

Picture 6 is of my first boat Peggy Ann on the inside, then Doug Stroud's boat that he used for angling parties, with Maurice Cuddington's on the outside. ahead is big Ted's Alert and Boo Boo's (George Gillam) Challenger. My boat along, with Doug's and Maurice's, was crushed by the Meeching when the Falaise got into trouble trying to dock opposite in an easterly gale.

These photos are very nice. I lived in Newhaven. I was born in Evelyn Ave, .then in 2002 I moved to live in Ireland. I come back each year to see my family and friends. I see a lot of changes but it was lovely seeing these. I will have to go to the [Museum at] Paradise Park to look up photos there. Do they still print them off if I want to buy them? I remember the train going over the old bridge. When I was 20 Ii lived in the flats by the bridge, there was a tin bus shelter there. When the fire station was called for a fire, a siren went off. My son used to put hes finger in his ears, he was 19 months old.

Hi, I think I can remember Maurice Cuddington, I used to go to sea with him with fishing parties on a boat he was running for a Mr "Sally" Flowers. This fishing boat was a "decked in" craft, with a wheelhouse in which there was only a wheel. The gear lever and throttle was on the engine below deck thus, requiring two persons to operate it. "Sally", with his ingenious ways came up with a great idea. A piece of string tied to the governer on the engine, leading up through a hole in the deck to the wheelhouse and wound around two nails, "throttle problem solved". Now, the gears, two pieces of metal bar and a couple of nuts and bolts solved the gear problem, only to find that to go ahead the new gear lever had to be placed in the astern position and vice versa. I'm sure Maurice would grin if he reads this. Maurice, I think, went on to buy his own boat called the "Vanguard". That started out its life as a double ended ex ships lifeboat I believe, but had a new stern grafted on to her. "Sally" was a well known and much liked character on the harbourside as well as being a crew member of the tug Meeching.

Hi, Further to my previous ramblings about "Sally's" boat, I have now remembered that the wheelhouse did not in fact have a wheel, it was steered by a tiller, one of those funny shaped type that "bent" around the after mast. This was about 1958/9ish. At that time, I seem to remember that Maurice's father Tom, owned a white boat called the Silver Mist, a very nice looking craft. If my memory has been "playing tricks", I'm sure someone out there will correct me.

Picture 5, on the west quay stage, inside is Dickie Buds dory, next i think is Dave Scotts Tiza, outside beach boat is possibly the Harvest Moon, on the East quay ahead of the paddle steamer, the little beach boat is the Shauna owned by the Novells, inside of her is a boat that was owned by John Lunn, called Jojo i think. Tied on the stern of the paddle steamer, the little green boat is the Sussex Maid, owned by the landlord of the White Hart at that time.
