SS LONDRES AT DIEPPE

Leaving at speed.

By Mick Cutler

Mick has described Londres as the 'Mail Boat', as Newhaven-Dieppe held the Royal Mail contract between the UK and France. British vessels on the service were entitled to use the prefix RMS, meaning Royal Mail Ship.

They often left Newhaven or Dieppe at speed, with a tight schedule to be kept to. I often wonder what our current Health and Safety people would say about a large ship leaving Newhaven at 20 knots!
