NEWHAVEN COUNTY SECONDARY SCHOOL

Sailing

By Andy Gilbert and Susan Carnochan

In the 1960's and 70's, Newhaven County Secondary School's students and teachers were often to be found at Piddinghoe Pond or Seaford beach with the school's boats, usually Graduates or Cadets. These photos give a flavour of what went on. Did you sail with the school? One of the boat's name was 'Aquila', and maybe one was called 'Speedwell'? Do you remember?

Our thanks go to Susan Carnochan (Sue Butlin back then) for sharing her collection with us.

I was in the sailing class when it was first introduced in 1960, on a Friday afternoon and also some evenings. Shirley Harrop (nee Clear).

I learnt to sail Cadets at Piddinghoe. Capsized first time on a windy day but it didn't put me off.  Much preferred it to gym !  Years later I sailed again obtaining RYA Day Skipper.
