EAST QUAY MOORINGS - 1990'S

Unusual Vistitors

By Laurie Stonehouse

Shieldhall is a former Mersey sludge carrier, now converted to carry passengers on nostalgic steam trips.

Greenpeace is the former Dutch salvage tug Elbe, of 1959. After a multi-faceted career, she has been fully restored to her original appearance, as shown in the extra photo I have added.

As for Walk the Plank, I seem to recall that this vessel was part of what might best be termed 'maritime theatre' or 'maritime arts'.

"Walk the plank" is the MV Fitzcarraldo which from 1992 – 2006 undertook 13 tours of the UK, taking theatre to the most remote parts of the country from the Shetland Islands in the north, to the Channel Islands in the south, and to many small ports and harbours in between. The ship’s cargo hold was dramatically transformed into a theatre once anchor was dropped in port, and opened up a magical world of drama, music and performance to a family audience including many children who had never seen theatre before. There is a website at http://www.walktheplank.co.uk/

WOW!! so nice to see 'Walk the Plank' I remember attending this whilst at Southdown Primary School as a day out. I don't remember a great deal apart from a fake Whale bursting through the middle of the boat! and the smell of seaweed of course :)
