Still from SNCF Movie

I'm indebted to my good friend and fellow shipping enthusiast Mike Jackson for unearthing a couple of wonderful films, both shot in 1965/1966, about our two long-serving French car ferries, Villandry and Valencay.

The first film includes footage of their construction and a dramatic night-time launching. The second is the story of a crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe. The passenger steamers Brighton and Lisieux are seen in Dieppe and if you don't blink, you'll even catch a quick glimpse of our first car ferry Falaise in the distance. The aerial footage is spectacular and the quality is high enough that you can watch it in full screen mode.

Wow...thank you for posting this link. I rode on both of those ferries when I was a lad in Brighton. School day trips to Dieppe were great. The video is very interesting. Thanks again.

This film brought back so many memories. Although living in England my mother was from Dieppe and in our frequent trips across the channel to visit family I recall travelling on the passenger ferries Brighton, Lisieux and Arrowmanche as well as the car ferries Villandry and Valencay. One of my French uncles worked on the car ferries. I was amazed to find this film so thanks for making it available :-)
