I would love to know more about the Emily Smeed

Which I believe was a wooden ship built in 1872 by a ship builder named Smeed at Murston Sittingbourne Kent

This was a 299 ton wooden schooner 133.3 feet long with 3 masts

It had a crew of 5. The vessel was assumed to have been built using recycled wood as at that time it was difficult to obtain seasoned wood.

Later it was owned by J H Bull and Company and registered in Newhaven. Bull had a contract to supply coal from the NE of England to the Eastbourne Gas Company.

My 2nd G Uncle Joseph Holder from Newhaven died at the age of 31yrs while on this ship at sea on the 24th October 1882.

I would like to know if this was as a result of a ship wreck or was lost overboard.  If anyone can help please.

Thanks

Further to my comments above.

Two Sailors drowned in the North Sea on that fateful day due the loss of the ships sails.

The 2nd sailor was a 42 year old " N Peterson "

Editors comment:-

It seems neither of the deaths are listed in the GRO registers. Mel
