Photo:1960`s? I cannot recall what this blockade was all about, can anyone help me out here please. My father Bob told me that before the invasions of Dieppe and Normandy during the 1939/1945 world war that it was almost possible to walk across the harbour due to the amount of ships berthed.

Has to be 1960's, I think, looking at those boats, but some don't look like Newhaven boats. There is a sequence of shots at the Museum of this, with Meeching taking a ' close look', then turning back for the safety of No.5 stage!

Someone make me a list of all the things I've got to look up next time I'm there!!

This picture was taken in about 1972/3 it was the blockade, which involved boats from as far east as Rye and as far west as Shoreham. I will try and find out more and add at a later date.

Our boat (New Aquarius NN92) was involved but I was only 6 or 7 at the time.

I remember that day it was in protest of the UK joining the common market and Ted Heath giving away our fishing rights. Sadly it did not help and the fishing fleet has now shrunk to a fraction of its original size. The takings at the Hope Inn hit record levels when this protest was on,  so at least somone benefited.

What an interesting photo, in the blockade there appear to be quite a few 'Lower style' clinker-built boats (possibly beach boats) giving much-needed support to this significant protest against further rights being surrendered by the government of the time and as we all know things have not improved much today!  Quotas etc etc.
