NEWHAVEN DEEP SEA ANGLERS

April 1960

By Brian Urry

This was a dinner-dance and prize presentation in April 1960. There was no need for fishing boats in those days judging by the catches they had with rods, but fishermen do have some good stories about the one that got away.

The Angler's Prayer, "Lord give me grace, to catch a fish so large, that even I when talking of it, afterwards, I may have no need to lie."

I was present at that dinner & prizegiving. I won the Waller Cup for the heaviest bream. My father, Richard (Dick) Stovell won the heaviest inshore bag for 9th August. Dad died 8th August 1963, tragically early: I was only 11. Thanks for displaying that menu as it brings back happy memories. After Dad's death, I believe there was a Dick Stovell Memorial Award for juniors. I have only two photos of my father and would be grateful if anybody has others they can share. The dinner-dances were always graced by the St. Dunstans nurses and some of the blind ex-servicemen. One particular couple danced to a very high standard and obviously enjoyed it to the full. I could drone on for ever with anecdotes and impressions of the club and its members, all of who were very kind to a very shocked young lad.

Thanks so much for sharing this William, I will also put something on the message board part of the site to see if anyone has any photos of your dad. Jackie - Editor
