SS BRIGHTON OF 1903
Winter icing
By Derek Longly
Amongst the items left to me by my grandfather Bert Longly many years ago was a copy of a newspaper cutting showing the 1903 SS Brighton at Dieppe thickly covered with ice in what must have been an exceptionally cold winter..
I don't know which year the photo was taken but as my grandfather worked aboard the Brighton at one time I imagine he must have been aboard at the time of this event. Presumably the ship had suffered a rough crossing and with the cold temperature the spray thrown up had frozen on rigging, spars and the forward superstructure.
It would be interesting to know whether anyone can put a date to when this occurred, or provide any further information.
