AERIAL VIEWS OF THE HARBOUR

From the 'Golden Era' of the East Quay

By Joe Suttill and Andy Gilbert

Joe Suttill has recently posted a series of photos from his family collection on the 'I Love Newhaven Photos' Facebook group. He's very kindly given me his permission to share them here on Our Newhaven, for those who don't 'do' Facebook.

I've taken the opportunity to enhance the quality of the images and to add a few from the collection given to me by Les Harris, which show some of the ships from a more usual angle.

This photo shows Villandry or Valencay leaving harbour, about to pass United Fruits' Motagua and Blue Star Lines' Buenos Aires Star.

And here's Motagua, not quite as pretty as the 'banana boats' from the 1950s and 1960s!

Our next aerial view shows two of the larger ships to visit the East Quay. The freighter on the left is the Japanese registered Hawaii and the grey vessel is the Deseado, a regular visitor with her close sisters DrinaDurango and Darro.

And here's Deseado at the same spot.

This one's already been on Our Newhaven before - http://www.ournewhaven.org.uk/page_id__2276.aspx?path=0p69p - but this is a bigger and clearer view. We see Senlac passing the Blue Star Lines' sister ships Gladstone Star and Brasilia Star, with the car ferry Lord Warden at the Railway Quay, awaiting sale. You can see the salvage vessel Metrec Vulture at her usual stage and up-river from her at the old 'coal wharf' is one of the twin sister suction dredgers Chichester Star or Chichester CityMeeching is at her usual spot at No.5 stage.

Speaking of Meeching, here she is doing one of her regular tasks, towing a freighter out of the harbour. The ship in question is the Espadon. The larger freighter at the East Quay is the Amalric.

Here's another view of the two stylish Blue Star Lines' ships, Gladstone Star and Brasilia Star.

And finally, two more of Motagua and Buenos Aires Star.

Joe tells me he has a lot more in his collection and, with his blessing, I hope to share some here too. Many thanks, Joe!

Our Newhaven and the I Love Newhaven Photos group share similar aims, and we're happy to be working with them. As some of their members' photos appear here, so we'll be putting some of our photos on their group.
