Denton Manor and Church

Postcard ( Click to enlarge )

This card popped up on a local group so I thought I'd add it here to see if any of our Denton experts can date it and add some information.

Denton Manor and the church at the left and a farm? at the right. The old Ford car and the bus stop sign suggests late 1950s or early 1960s. I'm sure I can remember that concrete bus shelter.

Looks like a Austin A35 car parked up in picture as it looks to have the larger rear back window. In the A30 model the rear window was a lot smaller.

So my guess is the picture is in the late 1950's and pre 1960.

I owned an Austin A35 car in early 60s and would go to the Manor to do repair work on the plumbing. At that time there where two ladies living there. One was always dressed like a man, and smoked a pipe. There must have been a lot of handycraft carried out, as in an upstairs room, there was several spinning wheels and a very large upright weaving loom. It was a lovely old building, complete with all lead plumbing.

On mentioning this picture to Stan Seymour a local resident and retired builder, he thought that large black scar running down the centre of the road would have been the new sewer which was installed in 1958/59 in preparation for the new building works in Wellington Road which commenced in earnest in 1960.

Stan also mentioned the Bus Shelter in the picture was built by local builders Dunstall & Goldsmith based in Newhaven,
