Re: Bannisters High Street

My Dad Reg Gittings was an estate agent at the time and was very friendly with the old man Bannister - it was a mish mash of a shop and sold everything, I mostly recall furniture. Once Dad came home with a huge florentine mirror - evidently Bannister owed some money and Dad took the mirror instead (no doubt it was a gambling debt). Years later the mirror was broken in a removal - and at the back was hidden an oil painting - it was thought to have been smuggled over from France years ago. Bannister also ran auctions and this may be what it was, an auctioneer house. One of the local residents from a home in Seaford sat at the front and bid on everything - until the nurses came to take him away. My Dad took great pleasure in recalling the story of how Bannister had to hold the whole auction again. I don't recall the bike but I am pretty certain it was an auction house of a sort - I will ask my Dad's son who is in Australia now he might know - if I hear anything will let you know
