NEWHAVEN LIFEBOAT CREW - 1950s

Albert Mockford and fellow crew members

By Maureen Palser

They had just received a vellum scroll for a long and successful rescue off Beachy Head. My brother Albert Mockford is fourth from the left. He always spoke very highly of the skipper's seamanship skills.

They went out on a very windy November evening to rescue the crew of I think either a small Swedish or Norwegian ship that had beached on the rocks below Beachy Head. They took them off by "breeches bouy". It took many hours and they arrived back in harbour about mid-day the following day.

I can name one more for you Maureen the man second from the left is the Radio Operator Harold Hills, my late father.

Far right is Edgar Moore, future Coxswain, next to him is a very young Jack Shinn. I believe this service was for the Mogen Koch.
