This picture was probably taken around 1972, shortly before the old bridge closed and the new one opened.  I'm not sure how it came to be in my family's photo collection because we moved away from Newhaven in spring 1970, shortly before work on the ring road and new bridge started.  I assume one of our former Newhaven neighbours sent it to show the changes taking place.  I'm curious about where was it taken from.  A crane perhaps.  It gives a good snapshot of the river and harbour in the background.

That brings back memories I started to landscape the verges leading onto the Bridge with my JCB during the building process before moving over onto North Quay laying the ash mix which came out of Shoreham Power Station. to level the ground before some of the Industrial units were built.

This most likely would have been taken in 1974, not that long before the bridge and Southway were completed. As you suspected, it was taken from one of the cranes on the North Quay.
