PEGGY & CHARLIE VINALL

Family stories

By Mark Tovey

I've put these photos featuring Peggy & Charlie Vinall at the request of Val Lidster [see comments on 'Vinall Family' page for 30/6/19]. They come from the photo collection of my Mum, Marcia Tovey [nee Stapley] (the daughter of Mrs Warnes who owned 'M.E. Warnes General Stores' at 1 High Street, Newhaven from the late 1930s to early 1960s). Peggy and Marcia were best friends from early childhood.

I remember Marcia Warnes and her family from my childhood. Her boyfriend Bob Simmons in the photograph was my uncle and has very recently passed away aged 95 years old.

Hi Carole,

Thanks for your post, that's really interesting to learn Bob's surname, and I'm sorry to hear he's now recently passed away. From what I understand Marcia [my Mum] had wanted to marry Bob but her step-father, Albert Warnes, would not allow it on religious grounds [Albert was Protestant and Bob was I believe, Catholic - ironic, as my Mum wasn't religious]. Are you able to give me any information about Bob and his life after his relationship with Marcia, I'd love to know.

Regards, Mark

Hi Mark

Yes Bob was a catholic. I remember the breakup of the relationship but never knew the reason.

Bob married an Irish girl and they lived in Newhaven until the 1980s. They then moved to Powys in Wales because of work with their 3 children. They very much made it their home. Bob passed away only a few weeks ago.

I have such fond memories of your grans shop and her family. Edwin and Lionel were good pals with my brother Barry.

I can also remember watching King George’s funeral on your grans TV with my mum, my gran and your grans family and friends.

It all seems a long time ago.

If I can help with anything more just let me know.

Best Wishes

Carole

Hi Carole, thank you for sharing your memories of my Nan and also identifying yourself in the group photo on the page about her. I'm really pleased there's some people still around that knew her and her family. Thanks also for information about Bob, it's nice to know some more about him. I have a few photos that he's in and he is usually laughing; he seemed like he was a jolly chap. Knowing these details helps bring to life these old photos. I'd love to know any other memories or details you have of Bob and my Mum and of my Nan. If I ask the editor of the website if they wouldn't mind passing my email address to you, would that be okay with you?

Regards, Mark

Hi Mark, Bob (Robert) is our Dad, I have an older brother Robert and an older sister Clare. Our Dad was the loveliest, most wonderful man, he was called a real gentleman. It was so lovely to see the photo of him and your Mum. Kind regards  Anne

Hi Ann, thanks for your message. Sorry to hear that your Dad recently passed away. He certainly appears a lovely chap from the few photos I have of him and my Mum. When chatting with my Mum's sister this week, she mentioned your Dad and what a lovely person he was and how very fond she was of him. I sent your cousin Carole the photos I have that he's in. Perhaps Carole can forward them to you if you'd like to see them. If not, I'd be happy to send them. Do you know if your Dad has any photos of Mrs Warnes [my Nan, who had the General Stores at 1 High Street, Newhaven], and/or my Mum? If so I'd love to see them. I believe your Dad and my Mum went out for several years [circa late 1940s to around 1953]. Regards,  Mark

Hi Mark, I'm afraid I have never seen any photos of your Mum or Mrs Warnes, this is the first photo we've ever seen of our Dad at that age. Dad was never one for photos mind. He did mention your Mum and that they were engaged, he never mentioned why they split. Clare and I both said how similar our Mum and your Mum look. My Auntie was talking to Clare a few days ago and mentioned that a lady had sent her a photo of your Mum and our Dad, so my brother and I googled your Mums name and this is how I found this site and that precious photo. It's lovely to see a face behind the name. Anne ??

Hi Carole and Mark, thank you so much Carole for sending us the photos they were so lovely to see.  Mark my Dad looked so happy in them, you could see how much your Mum and my Dad really did care for each other.

Hi Anne,

I'm pleased to have shared the photos with you and Carole. Yes, I agree, your Dad and my Mum looked very happy and although their relationship wasn't to be, they obviously enjoyed their time together. I understand my Mum was very upset when the relationship ended [through circumstances out of their control] but had it not ended, then we and our respective siblings wouldn't be here! The randomness of life! Regards, Mark
