By Carol Walton

The pictures below show the Newhaven stations and some of the trains connected to them.  Many of the photos were taken by R C Riley, one of the country's foremost railway photographers.  There are also some photos by C C B Herbert, a railway engineer and photographer, P Hay, E Wilmshurst, S W Baker and W M J Jackson.

A fantastic set of photographs. I started cycling from our new home in Denton to the town from about the mid fifties. First to school then from 1961 to work in the High street. I didn't realise the railway went to the Breakwater until 63. Sometimes if late for school or work and the railway gates were closed I would carry my bike over the railway footbridge in an effort to beat the train and get a head start, it didn't always work.
