TOP OF HIGH STREET
Looking down High Street from Lewes Road junction c1900
By John Hills
Scene from top of High Street looking down to town centre in the early 1900's.
Spot the telegraph pole top left, which probably dates the picture to around 1905 when the telephone system came to Newhaven the exchange being fitted in a house in Elphick Road. It served mainly business and hotels at this time with about 30 lines. The Post Office having the number 1, the Police Station were number 6 and Bedford Ed. (solicitor) had the number 13 which was still in use at the firm in 1959.
The flint building on the left is part of the farm that was situated at the top of High Street in early 1900's.
