WEST BEACH AMUSEMENTS

April 2008

By Laurie Stonehouse

I went to the West Beach to look at the new barriers that had been erected to prevent people from going down the steps to the sandy beach and as I was there, I thought that I would take these few photographs which are probably some of the last photographs taken of the West Beach amusements.

I had no idea that these buildings were going to be demolished just a few weeks later.

Seeing these pictures reminds about the time of the last major cliff collapse. You will notice by looking at the second & third pictures there is a large gap in the cliffs.
I think this happened in the early 60's and caused much excitment because people suddenly said they could hear the cliffs breathing !! Correct me if I am wrong but it made the National News at the time and a radio broadcaster was sent to Newhaven to investigate and hundreds of us gathered to try and listen. I distinctly remember Fred Bartholomew being interviewed & made the comment 'I think it's a Monster', a comment which has stayed with him to this day ! The cliffs weren't breathing of course, apparently it was just that tunnels became opened and it was the sound of the wind. Does anybody else remember this or am I just losing my marbles !

Hello Laurie
I'm glad that you have taken these photos. Like yourself I walk on the beach regulary (dog walking), and they were there one day, and gone the next - and I didn't have time to take any photographs.

In reply to the comment above, I do remember the collapse, but not the noise unfortunately, as I was quite young. I also remembered the collapse further along the beach also. Was this in the 1970's?

I remember the breathing cliffs too, I took a new boyfriend to listen to them, and there wasn't a single breath to be heard! He thought I'd made it all up, so we had a row and I packed him up !!!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
As a child in the early 70's this was my playground. I remember a toy vending machine with a push-in pull-out device on the side of the hut on the left. It pains me to see my favourite beach closed like this. I have many photo's taken of myself as a child here, also photo's of my mum and grandparent here too in the 50's and 60's. Camping below the cliffs. I also stayed in a caravan park somewhere back over the cliffs ..can't for the life of me remember what it was called. Probably sometime about 1972-1974.  O'h and i don't even live anywhere near Newhaven but to me it was my paradise. I think a few will understand what I mean by that.
Well I hope the beach can be re-opened in the near future. I brought by own children here to walk on the beach and play and I hope I can do the same one day with my grandchildren.

Thankyou so much for these pictures, I  have been looking for pictures like these for a very long time. Such a shame I can't find any of the arcade fully operational.

I have very fond memories when I was younger of what seem like going here every day.

Having been brought up in Newhaven (Hillcrest Court, Gibbon Road & The Valley) I remember going to these amusements and always playing the same game, 'Street Fighter'. I will always have fond memories of seeing the little cars/bikes you could ride on, the smell of the hot dogs and burgers cooking, seeing everyone walking around in shorts and my big brother always on the fruit machines!!

As I said, I seemed to be at the amusements everyday, but your memories are when you are a child!! It must have been in the early to mid-90's.

I shall keep looking, I am determined to find some pictures of the place when it was running!

Got to go through my parents photos dad took of the amusements when they were working, dad loved his camera back then. I remember playing "Itallian 90" and "Kung Fu Master" in the arcade and the little bikes racing round the little roundabout. Was back there in late November this year to find all that remained was the little roundabout. My little boy is now at the right age where he'd really enjoy a day there. On the sandy beach I remember making sea defences with my brother and we hoped to be the last castle standing before water forced you to climb the steps. If there is any petition I can sign to help reinstate the beach let me have the link.

Wow thanks for these photos. Only after watching Stranger things, I started to remember old arcades in the early 80s, that I went to. My family used to stay in Eastbourne and remember getting driven to an arcade by a cliff face, so started looking on Google Maps and found it! Did a search on Newhaven and arrived here. I remember this was the first time I played Space Invaders!
