LEWES ROAD - C1976

Improvements for the new North Way Road

By Laurie Stonehouse

These photographs were taken from an upstairs window of 34 Lewes Road, the road has been completely closed off to all traffic.  I imagine that the traffic would have been diverted through Murray Avenue and Evelyn Avenue.  The first picture shows the new shape of Lewes Road taking place, work had yet to start on the sharp bend into North Way from Lewes Road.

In the second picture new sewerage drains and other pipes are being replaced.

I've been told that there was quite a problem with rats in the surrounding roads while all this work was going on.

I lived in the house in the top right of the picture as a child and teenager from 1952 until 1968. It was 27 Lewes Road, however, it was always known as "Folly Field". Note the Abattoir Buildings still belonging to Ferguson Radio.
