Relocating from Convent Chapel to Town Centre

I cannot remember the exact moving date, but this took place sometime during March/April 1996. The library was closed for several weeks whilst the stock was moved to the new premises.

This was a very sad day for the staff as we were moving from a very spacious historical building with plenty of atmosphere, to a smaller empty shop unit in the town centre.

The top photograph shows the adult section.

The middle photograph shows the main counter area.

The next photograph shows the empty adult area.

The bottom photograph shows some of the adult area and the empty children's area.

What a wonderful place the old library was. My mother, Mrs Cooper, used to spend many hours choosing books for the whole family there - herself, my dad, my brothers and sister and myself. Later she used to choose books for the grandchildren, reading was her life. When she was unable to go out on her own to choose books for herself I used to scour the libraries in East Sussex to get her the non-fiction family life and countryside books which she loved. She had a wonderful memory and could remember the names of the books and authors, which made it much easier for me. The book ordering service offered by the libraries is second to none. The staff at Newhaven Library do a wonderful job considering the cramped conditions they now have to survive in. Thank you all.
