Valencay reversing in. Note Royal Sovereign tower under construction on East Beach
R. Beckett
This view of 'VALENCAY' shows her in her original form prior to the major refit which changed the asthetic look of her, particularly the staggered port and starboard windows showing internal deck modifications. Both 'Valencay' & 'Villandry' had extension flues to their funnels at this time altering their appearance for the remaining years on the route.
Re ''In days of yore'' the picture really sums up the ''glamour'' of travel in the past-but the images that are heartbreaking are pictures of WW1 troops en route to Dieppe-sometimes horses are on Deck alongside the men and you couldn't move, so crowded were the decks..How many men never made the Homeward Journey..the Sacrifice was so great, on all sides and on all Fronts.
