HILLCREST SCHOOL

Not much changed

Richard Beckett

Part of an aerial view showing Hillcrest when it was still in use as the boys school with the playground well in use. Thankfully some residents in the town had the tenacity to stall and prevent demolition and development of this fine old building in order to provide decent accommodation and amenities for local organisations to use.

When I was at this school the playground nearest the camera was for girls only. I would have been there in the mid to late fifties. We had some classes there and then would have to walk up to the secondary school for others, which eventually became Tideway. If we were late for classes up there the punishment was picking up flints from the football pitch which was under construction.
