Newhaven Society's work saves Convent Chapel for Town

In just three months the Newhaven Society has encouraged people to raise £28,500 to buy the Convent Chapel building in Newhaven as a community centre.

At the eleventh hour East Sussex County Council accepted the auction bid for the former library in Church Hill and contracts were exchanged in August.

Society members, individuals and companies donated cast to the appeal fund. And grants were awarded by Newhaven Economic Partnership, Lewes District Council and Newhaven Town Council.

Newhaven Society secretary, David Harris said 'This was clearly a victory for the whole community, which rallied roun magnificently to save the historic landmark. Buying the building is only the start of the project. Now we must concentrate on bringing this lovely buuilding back into community use'.
