Sylvia Woolford

There are currently 7 volunteer editors. We are:

Joanna Balcombe:  I have always lived in Newhaven, apart from some time in Hollingbury, Hove and Hailsham.  I went to college in Gloucestershire, since which time I take a few evening courses at the adult college, locally.

Three of my grandparents were Newhaven-born, as are my parents.  We first had a house in Lawes Avenue, then moved across the Brighton Road to be near both nans.

Richard Beckett:  Retired BR structures examiner. I consider I am an intruder in Newhaven as I have only lived here since 1960. I was born and lived in Kent until I was 21, then Surrey until I was 25 and finally settled here in 1960. My main interests are : History of Newhaven and surrounding area : Family history.

Andy Gilbert:  I was born in Gibbon Road in 1956, raised in Newhaven and, apart from a brief flirtation with Worthing, have lived in the town all my life. My mother was also born here, in St Lukes Lane, and though my father, Capt. Frank Gilbert of the tug Meeching, was a Cornishman by birth, he lived in Newhaven from the 1950s onwards. I went, like so many of my generation, to the 'original' Southdown School and then to Tideway.

Although my work as a concert organist involved a lot of globe-trotting over the years, it's always Newhaven that I've called home. I'm now a music teacher and writer, and hobbies include photography, amateur radio and radio controlled model boats.

My area of Newhaven 'expertise' (their word, not mine!) is the harbour and its shipping since the 1950s.

John Hills:  My ancestors great grandparents John & Mary Hills, together with their two sons and all their worldly possessions, arrived at Newhaven in 1874/75, onboard a coastguard cutter from Dungeness, where John had been working as a coastguard. My father Harold Hills was born and raised in Church Hill, Newhaven and married Mary, the only daughter of local fishmongers Charles & Mary Collington, in 1936. My late parents Harold & Mary Hills first lived in 9 The Rose Walk and then moved to 18 Second Avenue in the late 1930's where my late brother Martin and I were brought up.

On leaving secondary school I joined the newly formed full time Lewes Technical College for a further two years, then worked as an apprentice with my father and brother in the family electrical contracting business.

I have been happily married to Mary for over 48 years. We first met when Mary moved from Brighton and joined our class at Newhaven Secondary School for our last term - love at first sight! When I first took Mary home to meet my parents Dad could'nt believe it - another Mary in the family! He said I will call her Sue, which he did bless him. We have two sons David & Paul, David is a fully qualified Electrical Engineer ( trained by Hills Electrical ) and Paul an Electronic Engineer is working on electronic microscope equipment.

I am now retired after 50 years working as a Electrical Engineer.

My hobbies include golf, amateur radio, family history, local history and also enjoy editing pages on Our Newhaven!

Laurie Stonehouse:  I'm a local resident of Newhaven and have worked and lived  here most of my life, I am employed at Searchlight Workshops.

Carol Walton: (nee Eager): I am Newhaven born and bred.  My parents lived in Meeching Road, where I was born, and we moved to Gibbon Road when I was three. I married Terry Walton in 1963 and we gradually drifted to South Heighton and then to Denton where we have lived for the past 17 years.  I have a younger brother Paul who now lives in Spain. I worked for 15 yrs in IT and Export at Parker Pen, but due to the 'restructuring' was made redundant in 2008. I am now working part time for a coaching academy. I have two grown up children and three grandchildren.

Sylvia Woolford: (nee Turner):  I was born in 1959 and I have always lived in Newhaven. As a young child I lived with my family in a cottage in Lower Place (behind Woolworths), until these houses were demolished as part of the new road development. We then moved to Gibbon Road in the late 1960's (my parents - Kitty (nee Graves) and Ray Turner still live in the same house today). I have 3 sisters, they are married and they also live in Newhaven. I married Reg Woolford in the early 1980's and we have 2 sons.

Comments about this page

Just want to make a comment regarding this website. What a fantastic job you are all doing!! Looking at all the old photos and reading the stories it's amazing just how much I have forgotten about my home town. Although I only moved to Lewes, I still like to come back regularly and walk down the 'River Wall' just like my Sister Ros and I used to do with our Mum and Dad back in the 50's .

Thanks for all your hard work and I am sure there are many who share my opinion. P.S. Message for Mrs. Woolford. It was your late father in law Arthur who was very good friends with my Dad, Joe Blackman. He and his brother Harry and my dad use to go on Motorcycle holidays together just after the war.

Having been born and bred in Newhaven, and then banished to the other side of the world, I take great enjoyment in looking through the website and adding the occasional comment. It may have been a little grubby and rough around the edges but to me Newhaven is/was still home. Maybe one day I'll get the chance to wander down the High Street again. Keep up the good work it really is much appreciated.

I have to echo Rob Patten's comments about this web site. I too was Newhaven born and bred until I left to come to the USA in 1985 with Steve, and this site brings back so many memories some of which are very personal every time I read Gin Thomas and Sylv Turner's names. Thanks for all the work you folks do and please keep doing it. Hey, anyone out there got any piccies of St. Michaels youth group?

I've scanned the site but can't find any photos of TS Defiance - the Sea Cadets or the Air Sea Rescue Helicopters. There must be literally hundreds of them out there. Would it be possible to have a look and create an entry for them.

Just found this excellent site quite by accident. I was born in Newhaven but emigrated to Seaford in 1952.
My family links in Newhaven go back to the very early 1800's. Strange to say both sides of the family ran building businesses and are responsible for many of the building projects as a result. Its nice to see some of the old familiar names appearing on this site. Long may it prosper.

Hi,

Just found this site and am very impressed with the photographs of Newhaven in the sixties. I was born in Newhaven in 1948 along with my brother who still lives there. Keep up the good work.

I am very impressed with your website. I was born in Lewes but moved to Newhaven when I was three. My late father was the Station Officer of the Ambulance service in Newhaven. I went to school at Meeching Road with one of your editors, Sylvia (Turner), then spent 18 months at Tideway before moving to Warwickshire. I still have family in the Newhaven area. Good work, keep it up!

I realise now, I should have come to this page first. I have added a lot of comments to pages all over the site. My first recollections of Newhaven were living in the flat over Ben Funnell's bakery, we then moved to Northdown Road then Acacia Road Denton, then on to Wellington Road, Denton. I started work for Bannisters Builders in 1961 meeting John Hills on the way. This is an amazing site, I wish I had found it earlier.

I've just come across your website and pleased to see it brings back some fond memories. I lived in Seaford and was a deck boy on the Brighton July/Aug.1962 and Londres July/Aug.1963 before going to art school in Eastbourne. I'm now retired and living on Alonnisos one of the Greek islands. Amazing to see so many old Brit ferries ending up out here and sadly the Londres caught fire in Pireaus. Sadly I don't have any photos from my time on the steamers but I will keep looking at your site for any photos from that period. please keep up the good work!

Just stumbled across this site and it bought back so many memories. I worked in Newhaven for several years and went to Tideway but have not seen the town in over twenty-five years. Its great to see names that I remember from the dim and distant past!

Born and bred in Newhaven well for those who know it Turkey town ( the east side of Newhaven) went to Meeching then Tideway Schools, moved to Portsmouth for a few years while in the Royal Navy now back in Seaford and a member again of Newhaven and Seaford Sea Cadets met Rob Patten's Auntie in Canada a few years ago, its a small world, great job you are doing here.

I knew the Woolfords very well, they lived 2 doors up from us at 46 Evelyn Avenue. Harry Woolford, and then his newly wedded wife Eve came down from London just after the war. I suppose Harry was working in a factory in the London area as many his age were told to.  My uncle Bert Hillman from Gibbon Road was told to go to Thorney Crofts in Basingstoke -he worked for Amys at the time. I did the Saturday morning shopping for Eve when she had her first child Barry. I bought my first motorcycle off of Harry & his brother Arthur, who had a small repair shop up at Peacehaven. Harry loved his Ariel squarefores, with it's sidecar for the family outings, and I followed suit in the fifties when I started a family.

Yes, this is a great website, I stumbled upon it only last week and have already added a few comments! Now I have a question - can anybody find and post a photo of the 1960's 'coffee bar' please? It was the building sort of opposite the Cenotaph, squarish in shape I think. Maybe it's still there? Thank you.

Thanks for the compliment! I seem to recall that the coffee bar was 'The Morocco Cafe'. Andy-Editor

I am sitting in my home in Owen Sound Ontario Canada with my old neighbour and friend Sue Willson now Wallace going through the web site of our Newhaven. We are really enjoying it as neither of us has checked it out for a while. Sue grew up at 7 Third Avenue and my family moved in to number 9 when I was one year old. We have been in contact ever since. Sue and Mike Wallace came to Canada in 1966 and I followed in 1970.

I just want to say WOW how clear & detailed my old photos look on your website! Thank you for the interesting info: about the 'Deseado'. I love the way you have 'cobbled together' my 3 bedroom views from 47 Beresford Road, very clever! Heighton Road was no.16. I can still see them on google earth street walk:) If it is possible, please could you amend the wording UNDER the Rock Climbing photo to read 'Edward Hubbard, 1946 - 1965'. Thank you & thank you all for a great site for my trips down memory lane:) Regards, Brenda.

Thank you Brenda on behalf of the editors.

The amendment you requested has been made to your page.  John - Editor

Like others, I stumbled across this site & I must say it is great. Brings back many memories. I grew up & went to school here. I met my wife Joan in the Old Mill Cafe (was down past the Bridge pub) in 1967. We had a house in Meeching Road, 1973-1988 & I worked on the North Quay for many years. Shame it went downhill when they put in the one way system!

I've just come across this site and find it very interesting. I have lived in Newhaven for the last fifty years, since I was eight years old and am very fond of Newhaven. I'm rather concerned about the current 'water park' ideas as I feel they would swallow up Newhaven and spoil our countryside.
