Between the ship and the lighthouse you can just make out the tall signal post which was used to indicate when it was clear for boats to enter, while to the right of the lighthouse is the tall mast which displayed the black balls denoting the depth of water and, when requred, the cone to indicate the wind direction.

Is it an optical illusion or is Lisieux getting rather close to the East Pier?

You would hope it was, especially with the wind blowing from the east (according to the masthead flags & pennants).
