2nd South Middlesex Regiment at Newhaven Army Camp

By Ed Tyhurst

I have lived in Newhaven all my life and have always been fascinated by local and military history.  I have worked at Newhaven Fort for 6 years and have acquired several old cards of the Fort and Harbour.

I believe that the camps were the annual training establishments for territorial units and were always in tented encampments. If you look at the page entitled "Master Gunner's House", you will see one such tented camp on the hill up behind the Sheffield Hotel (as it was then). ALSO the path that the infantry almost certainly wore in the grass as they "trooped" down for their evening libation in that hostelry.

As for date, judging by the uniforms, almost certainly sometime pre 1914 I would have thought. Also it would appear that the postcard has been used, for the overstamp has marked the photo with a series of wavy lines. If so then there will be a dated postmark on the address side which will give some idea.
