This picture shows it how it used to be! Just to the right of this shot there used to be a old Thames spritsail barge which was lying on this mud berth area for quite some time ( If any one knows its name please refresh our memory! ) before this area was dredged and turned into what became Newhaven Marina's 'U Basin' deep water moorings. Another one for the history photo book now all the new flats have been built. What was Fishers Terminal looks quite busy unlike todays sad forlorn appearance with what looks like a heavy derricked cargo ship at berth .
The Thames barge was the 'Maid of Connaught', which arrived here in Spring 1966. - Andy, Editor.
In the early '70's my father, mother and myself used to take a walk along the Riverwall on Sunday evenings, go out on the stages and watch the water rats running along the bank, that kind of stuff. I would always have 5 minutes to play on the little beach in the photo looking for crabs under the rocks. I also remember jumping up on the side of the old watchhouse and burning my hand on the steam pipe. Didn't do that again in a hurry!
