CHAPEL STREET & MEECHING COURT FARM - c1930

View from Hillcrest Road

By Laurie Stonehouse

This picture was taken from Hillcrest Road. At the left in the foreground is Meeching Court Farm partly hidden by a large tree and with ivy on its walls. The farm buildings were demolished in the 1950's to make way for two blocks of flats.  The two large buildings with the curved roofs in the centre of the photograph were located on the West Quay, the left-hand one being the Sheet Loft and the other one the Bonded Warehouse. In the background towering above them can be seen the gigantic three legged Sheerlegs crane. The buildings & the sheerlegs were all demolished in the 1960's when they became surplus to requirements. The Area occupied by the Sheet Loft & Bonded Warehouse is now a car park and part of the West Quay Lawns.
