WEST QUAY - 1950

Harbour view

By Laurie Stonehouse

This fine view of the harbour is dated around 1950, a rare view of the west quay road from this era is captured showing no less than twelve people milling about. The large buildings in the background were the bonded and Sheetloft warehouses, while over to right on the East Quay are the Marine Workshops now a grade 2 listed building, the three legged sheerlegs were chopped down in 1962/3.

I spent many a happy hour as a nipper paddling around in the mud at the bottom of the little slipway in the picture, turning over rocks looking for crabs, pretty much right under the sign that says NO BATHING.
