TWO SISTERS AT DIEPPE

Seeing this picture and dates of service quoted, reminded me that one of these ships had been requisitioned by the German Navy I believe, and had seen service under the 'Third Reich' during second world war. At the end of hostilities she was returned to France,for further service on the Newhaven to Dieppe route following a refit to prepare her for normal service.

Mon arrière grand père, Jean LE GOFF,  était le commandant du Cargo Rennes (one of the twin sisters called  "Rennes" et "Maine"). Le bateau a été réquisitionné pour aidé l'armée française . Il faisait partie du convoi de ravitaillement "E3" avec les cargos  "Mars" et "Kerkena". Le bateau Rennes a été coulé lors des bombardements aériens dans le port de Dunkerque le 29 mai 1940. Mon arrière grand père est mort sur son bateau avec son équipage ainsi que son frère, Alfred Le Goff, qui était son second. Donc si votre photo a été prise après la guerre cela ne peut qu'être le bateau Maine. Si vous avez d'autres photos du Cargo Rennes je serais heureuse d'en voir quelques unes car j'ai beaucoup de mal à en trouver.

As I mentioned in my caption, this is Rennes or Nantes, one of the three sister ships that entered service shortly after WWII (Rennes was built in 1948). The Rennes that your great grandfather commanded was the previous vessel of that name that served the Newhaven-Dieppe route from 1925 until she was requisitioned and sunk in the Dunkerque operations in 1940 as you say.

And of course your great grandfather was honoured by having the ro-ro freight ferry Capitaine Le Goff named after him in 1972.

Comme je l'ai dit dans mon titre, c'est Rennes ou Nantes, l'un des trois navires jumeaux qui est entré en service peu de temps après la DEUXIÈME GUERRE MONDIALE (Rennes a été construit en 1948). Les Rennes que votre arrière grand-père a commandé le navire précédent, de ce nom qui a servi la route Newhaven-Dieppe de 1925 jusqu'à ce qu'elle était réquisitionnée et coulé dans les opérations de Dunkerque en 1940 comme vous le dites.
