TYNE CLASS LIFEBOAT LAUNCH

Relief Lifeboat 47-037 "Sarah Emily Harrop"

By Jonathan Holden

This series of photos were taken in August 1989, it shows the Tyne class "Sarah Emily Harrop" launching from the old boathouse, to be taken to the Southhampton Boat Show that year.  If I can remember Ian took her there, together with Derek, Nick, Phil and Mike Tubb.

The Sarah Emily Harrop was a relief lifeboat stored in the Newhaven boathouse and used to replace other Tyne class lifeboats whilst they were away being refitted. There is no station name painted on the counter (stern) unlike allocated station boats that would say "Newhaven Lifeboat" for example. On this website there are a selection of photographs showing trials of another Tyne being fitted into Newhaven's boathouse to make sure there would be no problems with this type of boat. The boathouse being originally built for the Sir Fitroy Clayton and subsequently altered to accomodate the Cecil & Lilian Philpott and the Kathleen Mary. Quite a high tide so not as dramatic a launch.
