The monster just keeps getting bigger

Just wait until the chimney makes an appearance!

I, together with thousands of other local residents I'm sure, just cannot believe this 'BLOT ON THE LANDSCAPE' is being allowed to proceed particularly at the scale that this monsterous structure is obviously designed at. I know that the DOVE commitee strove to prevent this development due to size and location, not to mention a scant total disregard to the petition produced to prevent such a hideous building. This structure is totally out of place in this area and, whilst we all know things have to be built to cope with our modern needs, the planners should hang their heads in shame for blighting this already struggling Sussex town for the many years that this scurge will be on this local landscape!!! I have lived in this area all my life and I'm sure you can sense my, and many others', total disbelief at this project!

I agree Chris. Newhaven is in a beautiful location and has so much potential but its demise seems to be at the hands of the planners; look at the disasterous ring road. This latest monster is another example. It will totally dominate the landscape and if I was a visitor to the area, I would give Newhaven a wide berth. What happened to democracy because the feelings of the local people were totally ignored.

Excuse my ignorance, I am an expat living in Aus. But what is this?

This is the incinerator. It will burn rubbish from Brighton and East Sussex.  Dozens of lorryloads of rubbish will rattle along local roads to feed it, and it will belch out its 'entirely safe' (the county council's experts said it is!) emissions through a massive chimney.

Despite a huge petition and much objection, it was dumped on Newhaven. We're really chuffed about it, Oz might be a good place to be when it starts up! - Andy, Editor.

I wonder how many people realise that a petition is not worth the time and effort that is put into it unless it is accompanied by a letter from the people who sign it. A million names only count as none otherwise and the petition gets binned

Wingmoor Quarry landfill site Gloucestershire. Incinerators are unsustainable and dangerous ways of dealing with waste. Their toxic ash is linked to health problems and it still has to be buried. Wingmoor Farm is one of the few places in the country able to receive this ash: the press have already noted that the incinerator in Newhaven will send 183 tonnes of ash to Wingmoor daily for at least 25 years

183 Tonnes equals about 6 lorries a day trundling all the way to Gloucestershire and back with the resultant pollution and cost of vehicle wear and tear involved.

As a former resident of Newhaven (back in the 1960's) and following a visit last year I have to say that I'm not surprised at this project going ahead. It seems that the council are hell bent on the destruction of the town. What used to be a pleasant little fishing port has become the poor relation to Brighton. I was dismayed with the scenes around the town which all cried out that the town is beyond hope and will, at some point in the future fade into obscurity. Seems the councillors either don't understand, don't care or don't live in the town.

When I posted the picture of the "monster" I did not expect to get the feedback it received. I know this is not a political site but it's refreshing that local people here and abroad still have such feelings and views for this old town of ours.

Regarding Tony Kingaby's comment: I think our own town councillors were unanimous in their objection, it's the county councillors that 'did the deed' and voted for us to have the monster.

Interesting point raised about 'petition' not being worth the paper its written on unless accompanied by individual signaturee's letter to endorse individuals concerns!! Surely the volume of numbers of local 'PEOPLE' showing there concerns over such a scheme SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ACCOMMODATED !! although I do realise the point made is on a legal nature, and does not reflect local residents many long term concerns on this now implimented project now well underway.

The monster gets bigger by the week. As the huge structure encompassing all the various plant equipment is placed and positioned within the confines of the building, and the roof structure takes shape to reveal the overall size, this is definitely NOT a 21st century creation to be proud off !

Having recently been able to view this awful looking piece of construction, (quite rightly called a "blot",) and when you realise that foreigners can do this, it really strikes home that Newhaven has been "Sold down the river".

As a point of interest following recent postings on this item, I have just driven round the M25 heading north near Heathrow airport location and I am sure there is a similar plant for incineration to the west of motorway. However one striking feature is its size! It is only about half the size of the 'Newhaven Plant' at present under construction so when realising this, I wonder what amount of rubbish is going to be processed at this facility as size obviously does matter as it seems to suggest huge amounts will be treated ?

This is really interesting. We are fighting Peel Energy (Trafford Centre etc) plans to site a 'biomass' incinerator in our town. They will be burning reclaimed wood & solid recovered fuel. The research available showing how damaging the emissions are is shocking. Also these incinerators have a negative impact on recycling rates etc. Check out our website at www.breathecleanairgroup.co.uk

This incinerator has got to be the most the ugly thing I have ever seen in my life. I agree our rubbish needs to go somewhere but there has been no consideration as to its impact on the local area. The thing sticks out like sore thumb. Its ****** ugly. At least the new sewage treatment works at Peacehaven has been built below ground and will hardly be noticed.

I just hope people remember who it was that dumped this monster on us when the 5th of May arrives! Has anyone seen the front page of this week's Leader? East Sussex County Council leader Peter Jones (who lives in Hastings) is quoted as saying: "I'm proud of incinerator"

Can anyone explain the logic behind the siting of the new household waste disposal site, which is being constructed on the site of the old disused foundry on the A26 near to the Town Station. Why hasn't this household amenity been constructed on land on North Quay close to the incinerator since I have no doubt that is where much of it will end up anyway? With the entrance to the site not only on the busy A26 but also adjacent to the A259 (both of which carry a high concentration of traffic to the port and the North Quay, this will be a traffic hazard if ever there was one. Skip Lorries arriving and departing on the same road as the lorries going to the incinerator and when the amenity opens for public use, the cars attempting to gain access to it will be waiting on (and blocking) the A26 just as they do on the C7 Lewes Road now. And can you imagine the picture when (as so often happens) the A27 is blocked due to an accident and ALL traffic gets diverted along the A259 through Seaford and Newhaven. ABSOLUTE CHAOS.

Am I wrong, or is the new facility for recycling only, thus taking some of the load off the C7 Lewes Road site (which will eventually close).

As for Cllr Jones' comments, I have a feeling the Argus and Express must be bracing themselves for a deluge of letters - I'm writing mine!

On two occasions recently I disposed of some large sheets of glass at the present site on the C7, and when I enquired where I should place them, I was told to put them in the Household waste skip and NOT as I would have thought, for recycling with other glass. This clearly provides evidence that all recyclable materials are NOT being treated as such.

I wonder what cllr Jones felt about the incinerater that was built at Hastings.I cant remember all the details but it was eventually closed down, after the local residents complained.

R, I asked them about this some time ago. They said they couldn't handle sheet glass or broken glass, just bottles. Sheet glass, I can perhaps understand, but why not broken glass? As I pointed out to them, the loud clinks and crashes when I put my bottle in the hole clearly indicated that broken glass is what they now had! There was no answer to that one....
