This picture was taken when Johnny Leach and (Diane or Rosalind ) Rowe visited the Newhaven Boys Club at the Shakespeare Hall, South Road, and played exhibition matches against the Newhaven Boys Club "A" & "B" teams, the boys in the picture.
Back row: John Hills, Paul Jordan, John Leach, Miss Rowe, Martin Hills, Terry Burroughs
Front row: Derek "Sam" Driver, Dave Bain, Ron Packham.
The twins Diane and Rosalind Rowe surprised the world of table tennis with their doubles success in Vienna in 1951, and then delighted their home crowd with a repeat victory in 1954 at the Royal Albert Hall. The all-English final, against Ann Haydon and Kathleen Best, took place on the twins 21st birthday.
Johnny Leach was the world Table Tennis mens singles champion in 1949 & 1951.
Thanks for adding this picture Dave, it brought back a few memories of that night playing Johnny Leach and losing ! I think it was Rosalind Rowe who was with Johnny Leach that night.
