1914 - 1955

By Richard

I was recently shown some auction documents for properties in Newhaven. Pictures 1 - 4 are for three properties believed to have been auctioned in the early to mid 1930's but the  date of the auction and the price realised is unknown. Picture 1 shows the view that the owners would have had, while pictures 2, 3 & 4 are of the properties The property in photo 2 had 14 bedrooms and was described as " Admirably suited for use as a Holiday Camp, Convalescent Home or as an Hotel." Do any of these properties still exist?

Picture 5 is self explanatory and I know that one of these at least fetched £2,950 at the Auction.

Picture 6 is again self explanatory. auctioned in July 1914, I wonder how much that one realised?

My initial thoughts are that pictures 2,3 & 4 are the same property viewed from different angles but the number of chimney pots doesnt seem to match. If picture 1 is the view it must have been close to where Tideway was built. On the cliffside there was (maybe still is) a world war two radar installation so I wonder if this 'house' was taken over by the ministry during the war and subsequently placed for disposal afterwards. Of course I could be totally 'off base'.

From Richard,

Rob, ALL three are different properties. Picture 2 is of a property called "St Edythe's", with 14 bedrooms. Picture 3 is a three bedroomed house called "Annapolis" and Picture 4 is a four bedroom Bungalow called "Kinmel". A second look at the catalogue has revealed the auction took place in 1936.

So, what became of the properties in pictures 2-4? The only house(s) I can think of with a view like that would be the semi's on the other side of the farmers field from Tideway towards Peacehaven, where 'Taff' Davies the PhysEd teacher and the Davies clan lived.
