FORGOTTEN LOCAL CUSTOM?

Do you remember what's happening?

By Marie Anscomb

Can anyone suggest what was going on here? The men look as though they are dressed for a wedding, with their buttonholes, but that doesn't explain what Father Neptune is doing!

I think it must have been something to do with the Eastide as my Nan & three of my uncles are in the photo & they came from the Eastside - the Browning family.

I believe the gentleman on the far right (middle row) is my lovely Grandad, Jim (Jimmer) Browning. He and his wife, Mercy Jane (nee Corbett), lived in Saxon Road.

I think it could be to do with the old Newhaven Labour Club, top row right are my uncle George and aunt Ada Flowers and bottom row second right is my stepgran Lilia Lipscombe, they were club members for years and I know there were lots of variety events at the club.
