CRUISE SHIPS VISIT
June 1994
By Bill Purcell
Regina Renaissance and Regina 5 Cruise ships in Newhaven Harbour, June 1994. Both ships registered in 'Monrovia', and are flying the Stars and Stripes. They arrived with American tourists to celebrate the D Day celebrations.
Newhaven as a cruise destination! These two vessels (and their sisters) were quite regular visitors back in the 'heyday' and called in under a variety of names as their ownership changed hands. Monrovia is the capital of Liberia and the ships are therefore flying the Liberian national flag - which does look very similar to the US Stars and Stripes.
Other ships in this great flashback include the sand dredger Sand Swift, the Newhaven pilot boat, the then current Newhaven Lifeboat 'Keith Anderson', and, up at the Marine Workshops, the former Isle of Wight ferry Southsea - looking very smart after the local council ordered her owners to tidy her up.
