NEWHAVEN CARNIVAL SOCIETY

c 1937

Photo: Illustrative image for the 'NEWHAVEN CARNIVAL SOCIETY' page

I discovered recently that my grandfather Clement Lower was for a while chairman of the Newhaven Carnival Society. When I showed this picture to my aunt (his daughter) that's what she told me!
As far as I can make out, this would have been taken 1935-9. I have a picture of my grandfather dressed as he is here, taken in his back garden. He moved to 82 Brighton Road shortly before the last war but I don't recognise the garden he is standing in here so I'm assuming the picture was taken shortly before they moved.
I've no idea who the other people in this photo are but would be interested to know more if anybody can enlighten me.
Oh by the way, my grandfather is the one dressed as a cowboy!

The Viking is Ernest Swadling who worked for the Baltic Saw Mills and lived at 26 Newfield Road with his wife Minnie (nee Betts). He was for many years President of the Carnival Society. He died in 1966. He was a life long supporter of the Society. Somewhere I have a photo of him in his Viking costume.

Dig it out please Michael, we will add to site; thanks for comments.
