In 1930 the lifeboat Sir Fitzroy Clayton was replaced by a new boat the Cecil and Lilian Phillpot. She had been built at Cowes, Isle of White, by J Samuel White at a cost of £7982. Powered by two 40 horse power petrol engines which gave her a speed of 8:25 knots, at a length of 45ft 6ins, she was a Watson cabin class non self righter. The boat-house had to be re-built wider to house her. Mrs Phillpot funded two lifeboats, the other one being based in Hastings. On the 7th of July 1931 H.R.H. Prince George, the Duke Of Kent, performed the christening ceremony.

The Cecil and Lilian Phillpot was replaced in 1959 by the Kathleen Mary, during her service at Newhaven she had 154 (shouts) official launches, saving 99 lives.
