During the 1930's through to the 1950's (before Blue Star Garage), Don Hughes with his sister Dot and wife Win owned and ran the garage which also included a cafe on this site at Denton Corner.
Also at the back of the garage (during the second world war) the Auxilliary Fire Service had a base there. Until joining the Royal Air Force in 1940 my late father-in-law Jim Strudwick was part of the team, (seen here standing at the bonnet of the fire car in the top photograph). Thane House in Mount Road can also be seen in this photograph, it was demolished in the 1960's to make way for six new houses! Note also the Air Raid Shelter in the bottom four photographs. After selling his garage Don and Dot ventured into the new world of television, mainly rental, and until their retirement had a shop in Fisher Street, Lewes.

Would you know if it is Fred Baily standing in the back row? It certainly looks like him, he was my father.
Thanks
Val

And that's my Dad Frank Gilbert fourth from the left in the top photo and sitting at the right in the one below.

Many thanks for these Colin.

Curious footnote:
I showed the photos of the AFS to my sister today. She looked at the signatures on the sepia photo and said the same thing I'd been thinking for a while. My Dad's 'signature' isn't his - it's actually my Mum's handwriting. Why she signed it for him, we'll never know as she passed away last year, but it may have been 'signed' after Dad returned to the Merchant Navy.
