LEWES ROAD

This month’s picture shows the work being carried out on Lewes Road in readiness for the new North Way Road.  Lewes Road has been completely closed off to all traffic, all vehicles being diverted through Murray Avenue and Evelyn Avenue. This picture, taken c1976, shows the new shape of Lewes Road taking place; work had yet to start on the sharp bend into North Way from Lewes Road. New sewerage drains and other pipes are also being replaced, and apparently there was quite a problem with rats in the surrounding roads while all this work was going on. In the background is the area known as "Folly Field".  The Abattoir Buildings still belonging to Ferguson Radio are in view and have since been replaced with sheltered  housing called Essex Mews.
