OAKLEY FAMILY
By John Oakley
My name is Bob Oakley and I was born in Newhaven in 1933 at Lawes Avenue. My grand father was Robert Edwin Bennett and he had an engineering workshop on the river wall opposite the old shearlegs that were used for lifting the engines and boilers from the cross channel boats for the Southern Railway. I believe he was quite an important man in the town as he was head of Fire brigade and the Territorial army. I recognise some of the names on the photographs and will write more as an attachment if you wish. Please let me know Thank you Bob Oakley.
(From Editors) Hi Bob, glad you find the web site interesting. We would welcome any historical information you can add especially your own memories of the town, and your relatives & friends here in Newhaven.
