GERMAN COASTER PELLWORM

With shifted cargo

By Stephen Morris

The small German coaster Pellworm arrives at the North Quay with a shifted cargo of beech boules, a regular trade at the time (around 1970).

The coaster obviously had a rough passage and some of the deck cargo went overboard, resulting in entering port with a definite list!

That is a fair old list! Yes, there were a lot of beech boules coming in through Newhaven's North Quay back then. Planks of beech, basically!

The view of the stern is interesting, it's not often that the ship's name and port of registry are the same.

Looking at these photos I imagine the crew gave a sigh of relief once they were safely alongside!
