HARRY LOCKE - NEWHAVEN CARNIVAL WEEK c.1963

Bowling in Fort Road Recreaction Ground

By Mary Avenell and Ginny Smith

This carnival used to take place every August and ended with an event on August Bank holiday held at the Fort Road Recreation ground.  The week involved various activities and at the end of the week there were fancy dress competitions, the crowning of Miss Newhaven and floats going through the streets (on local coal lorries) amongst other things.  Horace Horscraft had his horse at the recreation ground for rides. Does anyone remember any more about it?

Notice how all the men are wearing ties!

Looks like Dave King standing at the back, the tall man in the dark suit. He was leader of the Newhaven Boy's Club in the late 50's and early 60's he also played cricket for Newhaven...

What a shame no one takes on the job of arranging this sort of thing now.

To the right of Dave King is David Boniface and then myself Ted Cairns by the side of him. My brother John Cairns is standing in front of us. They were great days..
