This old postcard has just popped up on a Sussex photo group, so I thought I'd add it here as well.
It's a view from an unusual angle, and had me scratching my head for a bit. Not exactly 'The Docks', despite what the caption says!
It was taken from the old bridge to Denton Island. There are two cranes at the North Quay at the left of the photo. To their right is Railway Terrace and you can just see the Railway Inn beyond that. Coming right you can make out the Town Station and the roofs of the engine sheds next to the Marine Shops. Look carefully and you'll see the tall iron centre piece of the old swing bridge.
The small craft at the right of the photo are moored at the landing stages that used to be on Riverside. That's the 'original' Riverside, the small lane that ran behind Bridge Street, the Co-op, RNVR drill hall etc.
The Sea Cadets are out in force here. High tide and not much wind, so a good day for a bit of boating. The large grey boat alongside the North Quay is their Whaler and down river are some of their smaller boats, one of them with sails up. I went in those a few times in the early 70s. There appears to be a motor boat there as well but it's not the Navy Pinnace that they had when I was a cadet.
