BERT LILLYWHITE

Denton to Berwick Easter Ramble & Picnic

By Mark Tovey

In reference to Bert Lillywhite's tradition of organising the Easter Good Friday walk from Denton to Berwick - see Terry Howard and Vicky Delaney's comments here:-

 Newhaven Ramblers page

My Uncle, Edwin Warnes, recently told me about these walks. Below are photos from the late 1940s [at a guess, 1947-48] which must be from one of the very early years that this tradition started. The pub in the photos is the Rose Cottage Inn, near Alciston. I've identified the few faces I know but if anyone can name anyone else, please let me know. Unfortunately in the large group photo it's a bit hard to make out most faces. For those that didn't know him, Bert was a coalman in Newhaven for many years and therefore, a familiar face to many.

I went on a few of these in the mid 60's. We always walked there over the fields and then back via Seaford. I'm sure that I couldn't do it now. Hundreds took part.
