THE FIELDS BETWEEN COURT FARM ROAD AND TIDEWAY SCHOOL

Mrs Jane Bradshaw

Does anyone recall using these fields behind Court Farm Road Newhaven? Maybe as a shortcut from Court Farm Road up to Tideway School (or Newhaven County Secondary School), or to enjoy the views from the top whilst walking your dog?

Is this the same field I photographed 1968/9 (one of a series under EDUCATION, TIDEWAY SCHOOL on this site)? It shows the boundary between the school field and Farmer Bowles land, complete with cows and minus the houses.

Val, I would suggest that 'your' fields are on the side of the school towards Peacehaven, where the cross country runs used to take place. The aerial shot seems to show a baseball diamond top right corner. It couldn't possibly be as a result of wartime use by North American troops could it ? It's close to the quarry where they had workshops etc.

Good grief Rob, just the thought of those cross country runs makes me shudder. They were always cold and muddy as I remember.

Yes Terry, in my day it was across the muddy field towards Taff Davies's house, turn left down towards the clifftop, through the bushes and gorse by the old radar site, and then back to the playing fields. Normally in pouring rain and a gale. Character building.
